Exploring Rutland: The Best Places to Visit and Things to Do

Rutland may be England’s smallest county, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in charm, history, and stunning landscapes. Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or foodie, there’s plenty to see and do in this beautiful part of the country.

1. Discover the Beauty of Rutland Water

At the heart of the county is Rutland Water, a vast reservoir that’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. You can walk or cycle the 23-mile perimeter track, try your hand at watersports, or simply soak up the peaceful surroundings. The Rutland Water Nature Reserve is a must-visit for birdwatchers, home to ospreys, kingfishers, and a variety of other wildlife.

2. Wander Around Uppingham & Oakham

Rutland’s two market towns, Uppingham and Oakham, are packed with character, independent shops, and cosy cafés. Uppingham is known for its antiques and art galleries, while Oakham boasts a lovely mix of historic sites and boutique shopping. Don’t miss Oakham Castle, a Norman gem with a fascinating collection of horseshoes left by visiting nobility.

3. Explore Barnsdale Gardens

If you love gardening, a trip to Barnsdale Gardens is a must. Originally created by the late Geoff Hamilton of BBC Gardeners’ World, these stunning gardens are full of inspiration, whether you're a green-fingered pro or just enjoy a beautiful outdoor space.

4. Step Back in Time at Lyddington Bede House

History lovers should make time for Lyddington Bede House, a fascinating medieval building once home to bishops and later converted into an almshouse. Managed by English Heritage, it offers a glimpse into centuries of local history.

5. Enjoy a Traditional Pub Lunch

No visit to Rutland is complete without stopping at one of its quintessential country pubs. The Olive Branch in Clipsham is an award-winning gastropub with a fantastic seasonal menu. For something with waterside views, head to The Finch’s Arms in Hambleton, perched on the Rutland Water peninsula.

6. Visit Normanton Church

One of Rutland’s most photographed landmarks, Normanton Church appears to float on the water’s edge. Originally saved from demolition when the reservoir was created, it’s now a popular spot for weddings and a must-see for visitors.

7. Browse the Local Markets

If you’re in Rutland on a market day, you’re in for a treat. Oakham’s weekly market (Wednesdays & Saturdays) and Uppingham’s Friday market are perfect for picking up fresh produce, local crafts, and unique finds. The monthly Oakham Farmers’ Market (every third Saturday) is a great place to sample delicious local food.

8. Take a Wine or Gin Tour

Rutland may be small, but it has some fantastic local drinks producers. Welland Valley Vineyard offers vineyard tours and tastings, while Multum Gin Parvo in Oakham is perfect for gin lovers looking to learn more about small-batch distilling.

9. Walk the Hambleton Peninsula

For a scenic stroll, the Hambleton Peninsula Walk offers some of the best views in Rutland. This circular route (around 5 miles) takes you along the shores of Rutland Water, with plenty of wildlife and photo opportunities along the way.

10. Explore Rockingham Castle

Just over the border in Northamptonshire but close enough for a day trip, Rockingham Castle is a magnificent former royal castle with stunning gardens, historic interiors, and incredible views over the Welland Valley.

Rutland may be small, but it’s packed with things to see and do. Whether you’re spending a weekend exploring its villages, enjoying its stunning countryside, or indulging in fantastic local food, there’s something for everyone.
